What do a Nurse, a Salesperson, A student and an Executive all have in common? They all changed jobs or careers (or education) several times before they ended up where they are. This is becoming a very common procedure for a growing number of folks in the working world. The good news is that all of them had a helping hand in making a sound career choice or job match.
The Nurse? She was always taking classes and pursuing other certifications but still had no settled feeling of accomplishment. What she found is that she enjoyed the people and helping others but her MAPP pointed out that she wanted to entertain and sell to people. Caring for them was not enough, in fact, she learned from her MAPP that seeing people injured or in pain was very stressful for her. She would rather sell them a product or stand up and do something funny to make them laugh. However, she needed to sell them on something that she believed would truly help them. So after brainstorming awhile and reviewing her MAPP she decided to go into pharmaceutical sales where her background helped her to excel and she was satisfied with the level of contact she had with people in an industry she understood and enjoyed.
How about the Student? Allen spent day after day interviewing at companies for technical support positions, customer service, web page design etc. As a new job applicant just out of school, Allen had no track record to draw from when trying to get his first job. He discovered MAPP and decided to use his results to help boost his credentials. At his next interview he used his résumé, accompanied by a copy of his MAPP. He explained that he had the motivations to perform and the desire to learn anything that had to do with computers. A key selling point for him was that his learning styles section showed that he had a strong motivation to learn; anywhere, from anyone and anything. By proving that he could learn and that his motivations were in the area the company needed, the prospective employer saw that he was trainable, and they recognized the value of his education AND Motivation. You must sell yourself and what better way than to have something else do it for you.
What about the Executive? He Retired. Mr. Executive simply became Steven. It took him some time to actually make the decision to retire however. A friend encouraged him to take the MAPP. Steven took his assessment and it confirmed what he always knew about himself. Only this time he saw this tool as permission to pursue his hobbies and dreams. There wasn’t the pressure of climbing to the top once again. It added a whole new perspective that he had never taken time to see before.
MAPP helped him find the confidence to retire and pursue other goals. He went from the everyday hustle and bustle of the office to a schedule that consisted of playing the guitar and teaching others how to play. These gave him the satisfaction of doing his hobby more, helping others, and still bring in some income.
What about you? Take a second look at your Assessment. The point is to use it. Ask yourself some questions. What do you like to do, and why do you like to do it? Are you pursuing a career that will bring a lifetime of fulfillment or do you need to pursue some other areas or enhance parts of your existing career?
The MAPP is there to help you, and if you have the full Personal Appraisal, take it a step further to actually pinpoint your career and job requirements before investing your time and efforts without a goal. In short - make the most of everything you have, and make you sure you understand ALL your options!
Training; Guesswork to Targeted TrainingAlice and Greg conducted training sessions each week. They felt their training was good and covered all the information the attendees needed, however, the response seemed to be mediocre. They decided to use some tools to help them learn more about their audience. They had each attendee take the MAPP prior to the training. With MAPP they were able to see what the learning styles of the individuals were and get an idea of who the group was. Once they began using MAPP as part of their training the feedback changed dramatically. They were able to deliver the information in a form that the audience understood and retained. In fact, the participation rate went way up.
Training; The difference between motivation and performance is training. If you are highly motivated in a specific area but do not have formal education or experience in that area, don’t worry. Take the necessary steps to grow into the job. You know you have the motivation, so, getting the training you need to do the job will be well worth the time and money spent. Be sure to find out what naturally motivates you before spending a lot of time pursuing an area that isn’t a fit.
A great example of this would be an airline pilot. It takes years of school and training to become a pilot. You want to be sure you will enjoy it once you are actually performing in the job. And the passengers would agree!
PromotionsWhether you are looking to be promoted or giving the promotion you can reference the MAPP appraisal to see if the person is motivated toward the new tasks of the new position. If the promotion is to a management level, you will want to make sure you (or that person) is motivated to manage. Take a look at what you would be managing and compare where your MAPP says you want to manage. Is it people or processes? Maybe it’s ideas and concepts.
Building Productive TeamsMAPP can be used for team building to make sure you have a diverse group that can get all aspects of the job done properly. For example, you may want to make sure you have an ideas person, a detailed person, an analytical person etc., to insure the team is looking at all the options and ways of solving a problem. This can help teams to be more efficient and productive.
